Curriculum Vitae 

Anthony C. Lopez received his B.A. from Pitzer College in Political Studies, and received an M.A. in Trade, Finance, and Economic Integration from the Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver. He completed his Ph.D. at Brown University under the Political Psychologist Rose McDermott and Evolutionary Psychologist Leda Cosmides (UCSB). Broadly, Dr. Lopez’s research examines the evolution and psychology of war and its constituent elements, with a particular interest in dynamics related to the outbreak of war and the relationship between inter-group violence and within-group cooperation.

Dr. Lopez has active research projects in the following areas: Offense-defense distinctions in war; anger, hate, and revenge; deterrence and the uses of force; leader-follower dynamics; trauma and its relation to radicalization and extremist violence; the psychology of moral arguments in war; hybrid, grey zone, active measures and other ‘unconventional’ aspects of warfare.

On the Vancouver campus, Dr. Lopez is the Program Director for Public Affairs and regularly teaches POLS 103 Introduction to International Relations, POLS 201 Political Science Research Methods, POLS 427 U.S. Foreign Policy, and POLS 400 Psychology of War. On the Pullman campus, he teaches a graduate seminar in Global Politics (POLS 530).
