As we bring the 2024–2025 academic year to a close, we also say goodbye to Dr. Steven Stehr, as he enters retirement. During Steven’s 31 years with WSU, he served as the first director of the Thomas S. Foley Institute, 12 years as director of the School of Politics, Philosophy, and Public Affairs, and the chair of the Department of Political Science—all while guiding young minds in the classroom and mentoring many colleagues. His proudest achievement while in leadership was having all faculty who had applied receive tenure.
Steven taught across the span of 14 provosts, at least 6 WSU presidents, and 1 pandemic. Regardless of these transitions, he appreciates that much at WSU remains constant.
During his time at WSU, Steven has often been seen smiling while telling stories about his travels and Saturday Night Live episodes, reminiscing about conferences and teaching in foreign countries, such as Ukraine. He will also be well-remembered for playing Santa during the department’s holiday gatherings over the years.
Though Steven will not be in the office as often as in the past, he does plan to make office visits a regular part of his retirement routine. He will also continue his research as an Emeritus Professor.
Congratulations on your retirement, Steven!
